Commercial Quality Rope Light
Installation of Rope Lighting
1. Getting Started
Rope light installation is a relatively simple project for the typical do-it-yourself homeowner. First, you need to decide where you want to have the lights positioned, and measure the amount of rope light that you will need to purchase.
2. Locate the Power Supply
Decide beforehand which electrical outlet will supply the power to the lights.
3. Tools Required
Rope lights are installed with the minimum amount of tools required for the job. Nothing more than a measuring tape, drill and screwdriver, will complete this installation.
4. Prepare the Light Rope for Installation
Uncoil the rope lighting and lay it out flat where you have determined it should be installed.
Do not plug in the rope light or glue it until they have been fully installed.
240-Volt rope lighting is available in lengths up to 50m. If more than 50m of roping is required purchase connectors for the specific make and model of your product. If two or more sections of rope light need to be joined, you will need to use connectors. 100m is the maximum length you can have.
Your lengths of rope light will need to have a power cord attached to one end, while the other end has a blank end cap fitted. The joining coupler/connector must be attached if you require adding to the length of roping. Either way, these connectors spike into each end of rope light and the insulation sleeve will slide over the joint (attempt a dry run prior to gluing).
Rope light can be joined together with a straight connector/coupler, or a ‘T’ angle (‘T’ angles cannot be used outside). Bends must not be made in the rope light exceeding less than 100mm diameter or the product will be damaged.
5. Installing with Mounting Clips
If installing rope light with mounting clips, the equipment needed is simply a drill and screwdriver. Please read the instruction manual of your drill thoroughly before beginning to install your new rope lights.
For rope light kits that are mounted with brackets or clips, attach them to the surface with the screws provided with the kit. For horizontal runs it is advised that individual brackets and clips should be spaced 75m to 100mm apart along the length of the roping to prevent the light rope from sagging, whilst this can be increased to a recommended 400mm apart for vertical runs.
6. End Connections
- Check you have cut the rope light at the correct length (rope light can only be cut at 2m intervals and must be cut on the scissors mark printed on the rope light).
- - Put the end cap on one end. (the last point)
- - Push the pins in at the start of the rope light. Then push that in to the end of the plug cable.
- - Plug in and test. If it works you can apply the glue to make a permanent seal.
- - You can use the clear heat shrink if you wish to use this outside.
7. Supply Power to the Light Rope
For 220/240 volt rope light, just simply install the power cord jack into any household outlet. Once the lights have been secured, simply plug them in to the electrical outlet.
